Antihypertensives

If parenteral therapy is required, hydralazine is the usual initial agent of choice for intermittent dosing.  If intermittent boluses are inadequate or if tight blood pressure control is required, an infusion is preferred e.g. glyceryl trinitrate.

If enteral administration is possible, short-acting antihypertensives are preferred, eg. metoprolol.  If the patient is stable, then gradual re-introduction of their usual antihypertensives is typically commenced if there are no contra-indications.
