Basic rules
- If a clinical situation is making you feel uncomfortable, or you feel out of your depth, say so.The consultants will unfailingly back you up.
- If somebody is doing something that you feel is unsafe or dangerous, say so (“This situation / What you are doing is making me feel very uncomfortable”). The consultants will unfailingly back you up.
- It is your job to (as diplomatically as you can) speak up if somebody is making / is about to make an error. Your bravery in doing so will be noticed and recognised.
- If you are about to make an error, somebody will (diplomatically) tell you. They are only looking out for you. Thank them.
- Ignore the opinion of an ICU nurse or a family member at your peril.
- If you make a plan that the ICU nurse is happy with – run with it. If the ICU nurse is not happy with it – talk to your registrar.
- If you have any issues, talk to Jason who is your first port of call. All the other consultants are also always available to chat. They are very approachable and will do everything they can to make your rotation a rewarding one.
- Don’t let a parent unit leave the ICU without discussing their patient with you. If you can, accompany them while they review the patient.
- If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen.
- Pretend every patient you look after is your mum. Act accordingly.
- If you have an idea that would benefit a patient’s care speak up. Having papers on the side to back you up is always helpful (evidence-based medicine is where it’s at)
- Have fun! ICU is a great and rewarding rotation where you will learn lots. Take the opportunity to get involved!
