Expectations for all ICU Registrars

  • During your ICU registrar rotation, you are expected to attend the EBA-supported 5 hours of weekly registrar time
  • This is paid by ICU for for educational activities and is incorporated into the weekly registrar timetable
  • Attendance is mandated for all registrars not on approved leave or night duty.
    • This is rostered as “On-Site” training time for each indivudual in the roster
    • An attendance form will be marked off be each attendee
    • Doctors are responsible for their own sign-off on the attendance form
    • An attendance rate of 65% of all sessions is considered optimal for each registrar
    • Any staff member falling well below this standard will have this addressed as a professionalism issue within hospital and College training systems (performance assessments, in-training assessments, 360-degree feedback)
    • Staff not attending their allocated sessions may have their 5 hours of educational payment withheld whilst Supervisors of Training investigate
  • Off-site training time
    • This EBA-required training time to make up for a total of 20 hours per month of training time (excepting leave periods taken)
    • This will be allocated preferentially to enable attendance at VICEN events
  • Registrar staff are expected to drive their collegial learning environment, based on adult learning principles, which includes:
    • Ensuring their own, and others’, punctual attendance
    • Remain for the completion of teaching sessions
    • Ensuring the room is set-up (for instance, computers on and US machine present)
    • Ensuring attendance form is completed and then submitted
    • Sharing their prepared work with others
    • Report any challenges to attendance to the coordinating registrars, consultants or Supervisors of Training
  • ICU registrar staff are responsible for delivering their rostered educational activity
    • The registrars responsible will seek direction and guidance from the allocated responsible consultant and Senior Registrar for the session
    • Registrars will coordinate their colleagues for the education session, under supervision from the allocated consultant and Senior Registrar
    • If a shift swap is made that includes an education day, the person who is rostered to the session is accountable for the delivery of education session.
  • CICM trainees are supported in practising ‘hot cases, ‘vivas’, OCEs and WBAs by the consultant group
    • Registrars are allocated the coordination of consultants and registrars (internal and external) to attend these sessions.
    • Time 1600-1700 hrs on Wednesdays.
  •  The Supervisors of Training will receive a report of attendance at teaching, which will feature as part of  In-Training Assessment (ITA), regardless of College affiliation

Low attendance rates will be reflected in end-of-term assessments through the Supervisors of Training
