Bendigo Health Critical Care Curriculum

The objectives of your training are aligned with the CICM objectives as outlined in the policy document for the Foundation year.  Your rotation within the unit will be either 3 months or 6 months duration, and it is acknowledged that not all ICU junior doctors will become CICM trainees.  However, there is a minimum standard of learning objectives we want you to attain which will be delivered in a multi-modal fashion.

Core Topic lectures:
A core topic will be presented – with pre-teaching reading. It is the responsibility of the trainee to complete this pre-reading to allow maximal benefit during the delivery of this component of your training.

If there are any concerns or questions that you would like to raise please email Dr Vijay Palaniswamy the ICU education program portfolio holder.  We are in the process of purchasing access to the PACT program on the ESICM website. The modules with PDFs have been downloaded for you and placed in the Lecture resource folder found on your work desktop 'G drive' at: G:\ICU\Education\BHCCCP\Basic CICM CURRICULUM\Core topics folder\Lecture Resources. If you have an interest in curriculum development and would like to be part of the process change please get in touch with Vijay.

Journal Club:
Journal Club is held on the last Wednesday of the month. A topic will be assigned to you in collaboration with your consultant facilitator.  If you are rostered to present, please start liaising with your facilitator at the beginning of the month to avoid a 'mad cow' rush at the end of the month.  You can 'lean on' resources like the Current Opinion Quarterly review and your consultant facilitator.

Grand Round:
There is a clinical bedside Grand-round each week except when there is  journal club. This will include all the consultants and will be a chance to have a composite exchange of ideologies and to discuss the controversies of ICU. It is an opportunity for you to show case your EBM skill sets too!

CICM Part 1 Topics:
The aim of the CICM Part 1 program is not to provide the trainee with the core knowledge of the syllabus. That is the responsibility of the trainee preparing for the exam. The program will be geared at exam preparation for both components of the first part exam. The course will be delivered around the core syllabus topics in the form of SAQs and VIVAs as per the exam. The topic assigned for the week will be broad and it will be your responsibility to read around this topic and present for SAQs and VIVAs. Please note those of you who have completed the CICM/ACEM/Anaesthetic Primary will be a valuable asset for this part of the program. Dr Tim Chimunda is in the processing of getting college accreditation to become a part 1 Examiner and eventually a part II one as well.

Simulation:
Simulation is going to be a core medium through which you will gain your clinical expertise. Templates for the simulations we will be using for this year have already been placed in the simulation folder on the work desktop (G:\ICU\Simulation Interest Group\ICU Simulation Scenarios).  Please note which simulation you will be doing – one registrar will be assigned the duty of arranging the simulation with your facilitator, please ensure a two week lead in time for this. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the required resources for the simulation. It will also be your responsibility to convert the simulation template to the Bendigo Health template.  There are rules that govern the use of the simulation room.  An invitation will go out to you all for joining the simulation interest group – if you have an interest in simulation. If you are here for six month and would like to undertake a 6 month course with Monash please let Dr Vijay Palaniswamy know early so that we can facilitate this for you together with Dr Cameron Knott.
